Wordpress 2.7, Expanding or Hiding Your Dashboard
Did not know it until I was playing my Wordpress 2.7 Coltrane using Google Chrome. Choose your dashboard style. For me, I’m currently hiding my menus, like something simple, share with me. 
Expanding menus are set by default.
To bold for you, try the slim one, just click on the slider under the home icon, easy one right.
Hiding it, make it much slimmer.

Just a word of caution: the current version of WordPress is 2.8.2 and it seems you still have 2.7.something. There was a significant security fix in 2.8.1 so you may want to upgrade sooner rather than later. Here is a quick upgrade quide that may be helpful: http://www.krazyworks.com/?p=812
