Did not know it until I was playing my Wordpress 2.7 Coltrane using Google Chrome. Choose your dashboard style. For me, I’m currently hiding my menus, like something simple, share with me. 
Expanding menus are set by default.
To bold for you, try the slim one, just click on the slider under the home icon, easy one right.
Hiding it, make it much slimmer.
